John Riley Holmen was born and raised in Powers Lake, North Dakota. He graduated from Minot State University and completed graduate studies at UND and NDSU. 

John taught at Jamestown Junior High from 1969 to 1981. He was an insurance broker from 1981 to 1983. From 1983 to 1999 he taught at Jamestown High School. He was actively involved in athletics having coached and refereed for many years. He was honored in 2009 by being inducted into the North Dakota Officials’ Hall of Fame.

From 1999 through 2005 he was Associate VP for Development at Jamestown College and was a senior development officer for Michigan Tech University from 2006 through 2010. He is currently a major gifts officer for the Sanford Health Foundation.

John is married to Elizabeth (Betty) and they have three children and nine grandchildren. John and Betty reside in West Fargo.

John and Betty are members of First Lutheran Church and embrace the ministry of the Church. John serves as an usher and is actively involved in the men’s bible study groups. Betty serves on the funeral serving group.

John is very grateful for the opportunity to serve as a giving consultant for First Lutheran.
