In John 2, we find the story of Jesus’ first miracle: turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. His mother, Mary, explains the situation to him. “They have no wine.” And Jesus acts.
Spiritually speaking, Mary may be naming a truth we feel at times. For all of us, there comes a day when the thirst gets intense, the hope dries up, the battery runs low. Each one of us could probably tell a story about the day the wine gave out.
But maybe that is not such a bad thing. Perhaps when things are running dry, it is not a disaster but a miracle. If Jesus can change water into wine, he can change us too. Maybe this is not so much a story of a miracle as it is a story of a transformation. Sometimes the dry periods of our lives drive us to the grace and providence of God. Dry periods invite us to let the promises of God splash on to our parched souls and turn dusty deserts into plush landscapes of hope.
Poet Richard Crashaw said this about the water’s transformation into wine: “…the conscious water saw its God and blushed.” I love that. That which had no taste now tickles the tongue. That which had no life is now fermenting, active, and alive. God can do that for you too.
