Rest for Your Soul

by Pastor Corey

He makes me lie down in green pastures. Psalm 23

I have many times said those words from the pulpit. When I do, although people are polite, I can tell from their expressions that many are thinking, “Yeah, right when is that going to happen.” I am not surprised. There is an absolute craziness upon society that is pushing us faster, higher, and farther than ever before. If I surveyed 100 people and asked them this question, “What relaxes you and gives you energy and rest?” most could not tell me. Yet, rest is necessary.

In the Bible, rest is associated with the Sabbath. In the Bible, the Sabbath is not portrayed as a mindless contemplation and nothingness. The Sabbath is not the equivalent of a monastic day amid a frantic frenzy. The Sabbath is dedicated to giving you life: God, friends, family, worship, scripture, memories, or whatever it might be. Behold, the Sabbath. And, it is given for a purpose. Jesus said,

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. -Matt. 11:29

Hear that again. The creator of the universe is concerned you find “rest for your souls.” Apparently, it is not enough for us to rest our minds and bodies. There is something within us requiring more. St. Augustine said, “My soul will not rest until it rests in thee O’Lord.” Hmmm.

So, when you feel the stress of the world turning into distress, ask yourself, is it my body that needs rest or my soul? If it is your soul, it can find rest only in the presence of God. So, with all that said, it is time for me to spend a season in the presence of God.

In consultation with the council and the staff at First Lutheran Church, I will be on sabbatical (soul-rest) for the next few months. During this time, First Lutheran Church will be in the capable hands of the staff, led by our Executive Pastors, Marty & Stephanie Tollefson. It is my great joy to be your pastor, and during this time, you can be confident I will be praying for all of you.

Have a Great Week!
