The Poor

by Michael Olson

Do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor.
Zechariah 7:10

God chose what is low and despised in the world.
I Corinthians 1:28

When I think of the poor, I think of the first beatitude in Matthew 5, verse 3:  "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

When I think of the poor, I think of those with inadequate food, clothing, shelter, and other basic necessities of life.

When I think of the poor, I think of those who have lost their jobs during this pandemic and are still waiting for unemployment funds or another job or some sort of assistance to make ends meet.

When I think of the word poor, I am (of course) reminded of a song -- Poor Wayfarin' Stranger, which is a very important song during these times in which we find ourselves these days. Some of you will be familiar with this song and will be able to "sing along" while others may just read the words aloud or perhaps just read the words to yourself and meditate on their meaning:

I'm just a poor wayfarin' stranger a-travelin' through this world of woe;
But there's no sickness, toil, or danger in that bright world to which I go.
I'm goin' there to meet my father, I'm goin' there no more to roam;
I'm just a-goin' over Jordan, I'm just a-goin' over home.

I know dark clouds will gather round me, I know my way is rough and steep;
But beauteous fields lie just beyond me, where souls redeemed their vigil keep.
I'm goin' there to meet my mother, she said she'd meet me when I come;
I'm only goin' over Jordan, I'm only goin' over home.

I want to wear a crown of glory when I get home to that bright land;
I want to shout salvation's story, in concert with that blood-washed band.
I'm goin' there to meet my Savior, to sing His praise forevermore!
I'm just a-goin' over Jordan, I'm just a-goin' over home.

I also want to share the prayer accompanying today's Daily Texts because it is a beautiful prayer and very timely:

Gracious God, I am guilty of looking right through those who seem lowly. Walk alongside me today and remind me of those you call blessed. Held in your kindness, help me to meet the eyes of any who are hungry, sad, lonely, or afraid. There your eyes will meet my eyes. There I will find holy communion. Amen.
