One of Them...

by Michael Olson

Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death. He prayed to the Lord, and he answered him and gave him a sign. But Hezekiah did not respond according to the benefit done to him for his heart was proud.
2 Chronicles 32:24-25

One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him.
Luke 17:15-16

I was going to further explore the first of today's Daily Texts about Hezekiah, but decided instead to talk about the second of the two Daily Texts, about the Ten Lepers.

Ten lepers were cleansed by Jesus, but only one of them came back to thank him. What about you? Are you among the nine who don't say thank you, or are you the one who says thanks often or always?

Remember when you were younger, and you received something you (hopefully) wanted and appreciated? And then it would often be your mother who said, "Remember to write a thank-you note for the gift." Oftentimes, the gift was from someone you didn't see all that often.

Later on, when you pray the prayer accompanying today's Daily Texts, you will see why I chose the hymn that I did today. The hymn fits perfectly with the prayer. Some of you will know this hymn well and will be singing out loud. If it's not familiar to you, please read the words as you count your blessings:

When upon life's billows you are tempest-tossed,
when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings -- name them one by one,
and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your blessings -- see what God has done.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your many blessings -- see what God has done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings -- every doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your blessings -- see what God has done.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your many blessings -- see what God has done.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings -- money cannot buy
your reward in heaven nor your home on high.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your blessings -- see what God has done.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your many blessings -- see what God has done.

So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
do not be discouraged -- God is over all;
Count your many blessings -- angels will attend,
help and comfort give you to your journey's end.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your blessings -- see what God has done.
Count your blessings -- name them one by one;
count your many blessings -- see what God has done.

Here now is the prayer accompanying today's Daily Texts:

Lord, may the fullness of your love both humble me and cause me to be in awe of you. May I not grow tired of singing your praises. When I fail to credit you for the many blessings I've received, cease my pride and increase my thanks. Counting my blessings, may I help others to see theirs as well. Amen.
