A Generous Offering

by Michael Olson

Now who else is willing to give a generous offering to the Lord?
! Chronicles 29:5 GNT

Each of you must give as your have made up your mind, now reluctantly or under compulsion.
2 Corinthians 9:7

We give thee but thine own, whate'er the gift may be;
all that we have is thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from thee.

What do we do with what God has given to us?

Do we keep everything for ourselves and not share anything? Do we share everything and keep very little for ourselves? Do we give ten percent to the Lord, and keep ninety percent for ourselves? Each person and family knows what works best and effectively for them.

During the month of July, there was a promotion at Hornbacher's, and perhaps other grocery stores as well, to contribute to hunger in our community. You could give one dollar or three dollars or five dollars. I do believe that, during the course of the month, I gave each of those amounts at least once. That was actually an easy way to give an offering, of sorts.

If you're like me, you receive countless envelopes in the mail asking for money! I can't and don't begin to contribute to all of these organizations and causes, but I do give to some causes. I happen to be a person who gives "some" money to quite a few causes rather than a lot of money to a few causes. Other people are probably just the opposite of me.

It's kind of interesting to me that today's Daily Text from 2 Corinthians "just happened" to omit the end of the verse: "for God loves a cheerful giver." That changes things greatly for me. I don't "have to" give but, moreover, I "want to" give as God has blessed me.

I know of two charitable organizations which sent me three envelopes in late May -- one envelope each for June, July, and August. I had the option of sending money three different times OR I could have written one check for the entire summer. In both instances, I decided to write three different checks because I don't know how much people give to charity in August as opposed to late May or early June, before summertime and vacations and what not.

However you make contributions and offerings, remember to do so gladly and cheerfully, and God will continue to richly bless you each and every day as you share with others.
