'Til the Season Comes 'Round Again

by Marlee Robertson

The Robertsons really enjoy Christmas music. I was half way through our 8-hour Christmas playlist (for the second time that day) while I was baking last weekend. The song ‘Til the Season Comes Around Again by Amy Grant, a song I had obviously heard before, started to play and almost without noticing, tears began to roll down my cheeks.

At the risk of making you feel like you want to throw something (or someone) out a window, I will make the exhausted and obvious statement - this has been a difficult year.

My brother passed away in January and my mom in April. This is the first Thanksgiving and Christmas without them and it has been incredibly difficult. So many of you know this pain and this season magnifies the loss.

The song sparked a sadness in me as it talked about family gathering around the table, holding hands, smiling for the picture. But it was the refrain that woke me up to the reality of why we gather and celebrate in the first place.

One night holy and bright
Shining with love from our hearts
By a warm fire
Let’s lift our heads high
And be thankful we’re here
‘Til this time next year

On a single night, Love and Light came to the weary world. That Love and Light is here - now. Nothing can take away the reason we celebrate. In the midst of pain and sadness, Love came. In the pit of darkness, Light shone. Smack in the middle of chaos, Peace showed up. This Christmas, I will remember and cry and long for my loved ones. As hard as it seems, I will choose to lift my head and hands to the One who has come, is with me now, and will come again.

If we must say goodbye
Let the spirit go with you
And we’ll love and we’ll laugh
In the time that we had
‘Til the season comes ‘round again.

the land of deep darkness and light has dawned.
