Many years ago, a pastor told me that another pastor had told him about the acronym for grace: God's riches at Christ's expense. There are countless definitions for the word grace, but that acronym is apt for sure.
When I think of "grace upon grace" of course I'm reminded of a song. I'm reminded of an anthem which the Cathedral Choir and Chamber Orchestra has offered in worship once or twice over the past several years. It is an anthem that was shared by Mary Weisser, conductor of the church's chamber orchestra. She heard a recording of the anthem and shared it with David Ferreira and with me. After we listened to the anthem, Mary was right -- we HAD to learn this anthem and share it with the congregation and others who participate in our worship platforms.
Let me share the text of the anthem with you here. Pretend like you hear the choir singing and the orchestra playing this beautiful, stirring music:
Grace upon grace, mercies anew, love beyond measure, hope now renewed;
Pardon extended to me and you. Grace upon grace, mercies anew.
Your faithfulness great, your promises true, as blessings by faith come into view.
All that we need, Lord, is found in You! We bow and worship for promises true.
Grace upon grace, mercies anew, love beyond measure, hope now renewed.
Pardon extended to me and you. Grace upon grace, mercies anew.
No matter how far in darkness we roam, Your love reaches out to welcome us home!
Grace upon grace, mercies anew, love beyond measure, hope now renewed;
Pardon extended to me and you. Grace upon grace; grace upon grace,
grace upon grace on grace on grace!
