Bread of Life

by Pastor Steph

The week leading up to the Super Bowl is a big deal if you’re in the football business. The storyline seemingly plays outside the forty-yard line in the day leading up to kickoff. Will it be the oldest NFL quarterback making his 10th Super Bowl appearance that takes home the top prize or will it be last year's MVP who wins back-to-back championship rings? Brady vs. Mahomes is a tale unfolding in Tampa Bay this Sunday afternoon as the Kansas City Chiefs defend their title against the Buccaneers.

I used to watch the Super Bowl for the commercials and the half-time entertainment and of course the food. In recent years, the commercials have been released online before the big game and the half-time shows have become “R” rated, so I lean heavily into the end zone for the finger food. Loaded Baked Potato Skins, Nachos Supreme, Pizza and Chicken Wings are all fan favorites no matter which teams are playing. Comfort food mindlessly consumed between four quarters of play. I am usually so STUFFED by the time the last pass is caught that I vow to never eat again, and then an interesting thing happens. I wake up the next morning and I’m hungry all over again.

In the gospel of John, Jesus calls himself the bread of life. He says, "those who eat from the bread he gives will never be hungry." (John 6:35) When I read this I always assume that it is a statement questioning my spiritual diet. What am I consuming on a daily basis? What am I mindlessly munching on that is rotting me from the inside out? Am I relying on the provision of God or of this world?

You see when we stuff ourselves full, with the things of this world, we will never be truly satisfied. All the trophies we collect, and all the buffalo wings we can eat still leave us hungry for more. And we will ALWAYS desire more until we trade in the empty calories of bread alone and learn to feast on the bread of life. He alone fills us with all that we need; the daily bread of faith, forgiveness, freedom, and forever life. Knowing Him as Lord and Savior gives us victory! Go ahead, enjoy the Touchdown Taco Dip, just don’t rely on it to feed your soul. Only Jesus can do that.

Lord Jesus, give us this day our daily bread. Amen.
