Fog

by Pr. Marty

Fog.

It is hard to see. Driving can be difficult. It is hard to see. We could lose our sense of direction. One could get lost. Worse yet; the fog doesn’t lift…but when it does – wow! Last week, when the fog lifted by mid-morning, we witnessed a magical, winter wonderland. The trees were filled with millions and millions of tiny ice crystals. Each ice crystal was unique and different from the next. God has a way of catching our attention. We are part of something bigger than ourselves. This spring God will put green leaves on those same trees. Life, it seems, is on full display! God has a way of catching our attention. We are part of something bigger than ourselves. Next fall, God will turn those same leaves into a dazzling display of yellow and red and orange colors. It is, as if, God says, “Now, what colors should I use to amaze!’ God has a way of catching our attention.

Last week, we had fog. It was, as if, God was working in secret. Then, the fog, like a canvas was pulled away and we were left with amazement! The beauty was breath-taking!

This week marks the inauguration of a new President. Not sure how the week will go. Not sure what will happen. Not sure if people will protest and riot or maybe it will be a seamless, peaceful transition. Either way, it seems that there is a kind of fog that has descended. We can get lost in the fog. We can lose our sense of direction. It can be exhausting and scary. What is one to do?

If you can, this week, get outside. Go for a walk. Breathe the fresh air. Be amazed. Explore. Look for tracks. Listen to silence. Play in the snow. Give thanks for the trees. Look at the stars at night. They have been there a long time. Long before us; long after. Life is big and so is God! If there is a fog that descends upon our life, God is with us…working. We might not know it or see until the fog lifts, but when the fog lifts, we are greeted with amazement. Every time. Life is big and so is God. Best, to remind ourselves!

This week, if you can, get outside.
Go for a walk.
Be amazed!
