The decision...

 by Michael Olson

The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is the Lord's alone.
Proverbs 16:33

You ought to say, "If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that."
James 4:15

How many decisions do we make in our lives every single day?

How long do we spend time wrestling over these decisions?

I love shopping for groceries. I make a game out of it, actually. I look at the grocery ad and see what's on special, and those specials do influence what I purchase each week. I try to eat healthy foods much of the time. But I will be the first to admit that I don't always make the proper decisions when it comes to choosing food. Sometimes something "fun" and different and sweet and sugary will enter my grocery cart and, eventually, my body!

What am I going to watch on TV? When I get home at night, I don't want to have to think very much -- so sometimes I'll visit the Game Show Network and watch an episode of Family Feud or perhaps an old sitcom on another cable channel. I usually fall asleep while watching the news (for what THAT'S worth!) and then it's finally time for bed.

After eating breakfast every morning, I'll go for a walk. I used to take my walk "the very first thing" of the day even before breakfast. I need this walking time and prayer time to be with my Maker each morning. We'll see how motivated I am beginning next week when the time changes and it's darker outside than it is right now. Actually, it's been very pleasant recently to go walking right after breakfast and watch the sunrise and watch people driving to work.

In all decisions of our lives, we need to remember that God helps us immensely in those decisions if we listen to his voice.

Today's prayer accompanying the Daily Texts is "spot on" so please pray along with me:

Holy Trinity, today you remind me that I am not in control of my life. You are my God. You are in charge. Forgive me when I insist on implementing my own will even though I do not know what tomorrow will bring. Teach me to say, "If the Lord wishes, I will live and do this or that." Amen.
