"Spring Can't Be Far"

devotion by Pr. Laurie Neill

The painting I am sharing with you today has no great story behind it—no hidden symbolism or deeper meaning. It is simply a beautiful painting of a young girl noticing the change of seasons. See how the bright red scarf stands out among the black and brown tones. Sun glitters off the snow here and there and I love how her face, with just a touch of white, reflects the sun off her nose and lips. Ah, spring. We have been teased by mild temperatures and sunny days. For me, it cannot come soon enough.

I wanted to share a prayer with you that is found at the end of the book we’ve been looking at for Lent, Learning to Walk in the Dark. The prayer was written by Thomas Merton and is found in his book, Thoughts on Solitude. It resonates within my soul, probably because all my life, I have tended to put too much emphasis on doing the right thing and then beating myself up when I fail. These words remind me even though I fail, God notices the sincere desire to at least try. May you be blessed by this reminder as I was.

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to fact my perils alone.

Enjoy the warmth of the SON.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
