A Blessing

by Michael Olson

See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse:
the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God
that I am commanding you today; and the curse,
if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 11:26-28

Serve the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for
whatever wrong has been done, and there is no partiality.

Colossians 3:24-25

Many of you could recite this blessing almost word for word from the book of Numbers:

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you.
The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The following is an old Irish blessing that has been set to music by numerous composers and arrangers over the years:

May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back.
The sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

And here is another Irish blessing which I "found" when cleaning at home recently:

May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that's always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.

I enjoy receiving a blessing every now and then, and I'm sure you do, too. A blessing is usually short and sweet and to the point, and it makes us smile and makes us happy.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we take time to stop and remember those who have died. We visit cemeteries, we bring flowers, we say thanks for their presence in our lives. We have been richly blessed for having them in our lives.

May God richly bless each of you as we are blessed to be a blessing!
