Taking It All In

by Marlee Robertson

From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in—we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen!
1 John 1:1-2 The Message

I have been working on bringing my whole self to my days. (I’ll expound on this in the coming weeks.) This may sound strange but in recent reading and listening, I realize I have been living a little numb. Going through the motions. Not engaging all of myself in the experiences I’ve been offered. The fact that Jesus came to live in the physical world tells me that it is important to bring all of me to my life.

In 1 John, the writer talks about “taking it all in.” Hearing, seeing, touching. Later in the passage he says, “We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy!”

In pondering what “taking it all in” looks like, and how to feel the joy in it, I thought about last night when I touched my daughters hair. I recalled how soft and silky it felt in my hand. Her head was warm. I smiled when I thought of her smiling and nuzzling her head into my hand. I didn’t just feel her hair, I felt love. That simple touch, that I’ve done dozens and dozens of times, brought me joy because I took a moment to pay attention. This is what it feels like to “take it all in.”

Now, I certainly can’t contemplate everything I see or smell or touch, I would never finish this devotional for telling you how every key-stroke felt under my finger. I can however find pockets of time to savor the sights, sounds, tastes, touches, and smells right before me.

God has offered us a life to be experienced and enjoyed! Let’s take Him up on it.

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Amen.
