Chief Operations Officer

Oversee the overall finances, day-to-day operations, facilities and property management, office services and human resources of the congregation in a manner that is supportive of the mission and ministry of First Lutheran. Provide counsel to the Senior Pastor, executive committee, church council and staff in the development, presentation, and implementation of strategic initiatives.


Qualifications and Experience 

Experience in the fields of finance, operations management, human resources, and facilities management. Working knowledge of basic accounting procedures. Experience in project management. General skill set:

Essential Functions:

  1. Ensure that appropriate and accurate accounting records are maintained including:
    1. Accounts payable
    2. Payroll
    3. General ledger
    4. Monthly income statement and balance sheet
    5. Bank accounts
    6. Investment and tax reporting
    7. Individual contribution records
  2. Participates in meetings of the following committees and reports to Senior Pastor, Executive Committee and Council.
    1. Stewardship Committee
    2. Properties Committee
  3. Lead development and preparation of the church budget.
  4. Coordinate and monitor purchasing and inventorying of equipment, furniture, supplies, and other items.
  5. Research new business procedures, computer techniques, and financial programs.
  6. Ensure appropriate research and evaluation of all financial commitments and contracts.
    1. Review contracts and agreements for potential adjustments.
    2. Execute financial commitments and contracts as authorized.
  7. Ensure that appropriate and adequate insurance coverage is in place
    1. Health and property
  8. Work with Executive Committee on personnel matters.
    1. Development and implementation of church’s personnel policies and procedures.
    2. Salary review of support staff.
    3. Benefits package review.
    4. Maintain schedule and records of vacation time, sick leave, personal days and compensatory time for all employees of First Lutheran Church.
  9. Supervise maintenance and upkeep of all buildings, grounds, and landscaping.

    2. Long term needs and planning
  10. Anticipate and plan for future facilities development.
  11. Coordinate with appropriate committees, contractors, and architects, as needed, to facilitate renovations and repairs.
    1. Seek bids, make recommendations, and schedule contractors
  12. Supervise support staff personnel and volunteers in the following areas:
    1. Custodial
    2. Maintenance
    3. Grounds keeping
    4. Security
    5. Accounting
    6. Publications
    7. Office operations/function 
  13. Work with Children & Family Ministry, Youth Ministries, appropriate committees, officers, and leaders to carry out the church’s business affairs.
  14. Oversee administration of the computer system, phone system, and security systems.
    1. Maintenance of systems
    2. Upgrades of systems
  15. Development of business processes and operating procedures.
  16. Continually analyze internal processes; plan or implement procedural and policy changes to improve operations.
  17. Analyze financial and demographics data; develop solutions or alternative methods of proceeding.
  18. Contingency planning and succession planning
    1. Ensure key business processes are adequately covered in case of long-term absence, vacation, or termination.
    2. Develop plans for hiring and training replacement personnel.
  19. Other functions as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
