Church Custodian
Status: Full Time position
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Purpose:
The Church custodian …
• is a caretaker of the church building and grounds.
• is available during normal business hours, when called upon, to assist as requested.
• works closely with Church Operations to have the building prepared and ready for all internal and rental events.
• vital to ensuring a welcoming environment for all who enter.
Essential Functions:
• Maintaining clean church facilities by performing weekly duties and daily spot cleaning in all public areas of the building, including bathrooms, worship areas, childcare, kitchens, and meeting rooms.
• Working with other maintenance team members and church staff to ensure that all areas are cleaned and stocked with necessary items.
• Observing proper chemical handling procedures when working with cleaning agents, including wearing gloves, goggles, or masks and following written or verbal instructions.
• Performing maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, equipment maintenance and making repairs.
• Assisting with event preparations and clean-up, e.g., set-up, take-down and store chairs and tables as needed.
• Monitor building safety and security, assuring doors are locked in accordance with building schedule.
• Perform general ground maintenance (weeding, mowing, shoveling, deicing sidewalks, etc.)
• Interacting with church staff and visitors in a respectful, positive manner.
Specific Requirements
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant it.
• Committed to the mission and values of First Lutheran Church
• Must be able to manage time and multiple tasks and projects.
• Able to work collaboratively and be a team player.
• Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
• Must understand calendar schedules and implications of multiple events to custodial needs and support.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Custodial experience or training may be required.
• Attending staff meetings.
• Other responsibilities as deemed necessary.
Working Conditions
• Sits, stands, bends, reaches, and moves intermittently during work.
• Works beyond normal hours for planned functions of the church and emergencies.
• Communicates with supervisor and other church staff, volunteers, members, and guests.
• Is exposed to slippery conditions, odors, outside weather conditions, etc.
Accountability:
• The Church Custodian reports to the Chief Operations Officer.
